COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. — November 27, 2013 — Thanks to cold early season temperatures and hard work by Copper Mountain operations crews, resort guests have another reason to be thankful this week, with the opening of the 22 ft. Main Vein superpipe on Wednesday, Nov. 27.
Copper’s Main Vein superpipe is one of few superpipes in the country open all season long. It is the same height – 22 ft. – as the superpipe that will be featured during the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia in February 2014. Main Vein is 500 ft. long and 62 ft. wide, allowing for the maximum speed athletes need to boost an average of 15 ft. in the air while spinning off-axis. Later this season, Woodward at Copper will offer a smaller pipe, located on Lower Bouncer and sitting at 13 ft. high, perfect for progression to superpipe fame.
Top athletes and national teams from around the globe have anxiously awaited the unveiling of North America’s first superpipe of the 2013/2014 winter season. Copper’s Main Vein superpipe is the only Olympic-sized halfpipe venue available to athletes training for Sochi this early in the season in the country. Visiting guests can catch the high-flying action of these Olympic hopefuls from Jack’s deck located in the Center Village base area during daily private training, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Dec. 1 – 11, 2013and Dec. 23, 2013 – Jan. 30, 2014. The Main Vein superpipe is open to the public from 12:30 to 4 p.m. daily during this time frame.
In addition to the Main Vein superpipe, Woodward at Copper extends options for guests visiting over the holiday weekend with two additional terrain park openings, Lower Bouncer Rail Zone and Lower Central Park, on Saturday, Nov. 30.
The resort also offers an indoor training venue at the Woodward at Copper Barn. In conjunction with the opening of the Main Vein superpipe, and Lower Bouncer and Lower Central Park terrain parks, Woodward at Copper celebrates the extensive remodel of The Barn facility this weekend with Woodward Remix. Woodward Remix kicks off on Friday, Nov. 29, with the annual Yam Jam Rail Competition from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Set to take place on Lower Bouncer in Copper Mountain’s Center Village, skiers and riders of all levels are invited to compete for prizes. Registration is $15 and now open. Also on Friday, from 2 – 5 p.m., kids of all ages can create their own skateboard deck at the Woodward Cage as part of Santa’s Workshop: Create-A-Skate.
On Saturday Nov. 30, catch demonstrations at the Woodward at Copper Barn, with BMX from 2 – 3 p.m. and skate from 4 – 5 p.m.Fans can meet their favorite athletes, including professional skateboarders Red Bull’s Curren Caples and Volcom’s Louie Lopez, and XGames Bronze medalist Jono Schwan. Additionally, professional BMX riders Morgan Wade and Gary Young, and XGames Gold medalist Zack Warden will be present.
Members of the U.S. Freeskiing and U.S. Snowboarding halfpipe teams will also be in attendance on Saturday for a meet and greet session at The Barn from 5 – 6 p.m. The action continues in Center Village with the Santa Sesh from 6 – 8 p.m. Guests can participate in or watch the open rail session under the lights, followed by a holiday snowcat parade, the official tree lighting and photos with Shreddin’ Santa. Holiday fireworks round out the evening’s activities in Center Village at 8 p.m. For the late night crowd, the Woodward Barn offers a free concert featuring Paper Diamond, Two Fresh, Raw Russ and DJ Chris Karns, from 8:30 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. For more information, visit WoodwardatCopper.com.
Copper’s 22 ft. Main Vein superpipe hosts the first halfpipe freeskiing competition of the season, The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS), Dec. 6 – 8, 2013. Athletes compete for the podium and both AFP and FIS NorAm Cup points. This year’s stakes are especially high as the event also is the last chance qualifier for the U.S. Grand Prix series. In turn, the U.S. Grand Prix series is an Olympic selection event for U.S. athletes. This season’s Copper Mountain stop on the Sprint U.S. Grand Prix tour, Dec. 16 – 22, 2013, is the final Colorado Sochi selection event for freeskiers and snowboarders competing in both slopestyle and halfpipe. New this season, guests can watch both snowboarding and freeskiing competitions in Copper’s Main Vein superpipe under the lights on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 20 – 21, 2013. Note: starting Monday, Dec. 2, Lower Central Park will be closed in preparation for the U.S. Sprint Grand Prix and will re-open following the event.
